The professor and I decided that it would be best for me to come to the 2nd
class meeting. On the 1st day of class, the professor told the students to NOT
throw away the Personal Trainer access codes. She also provided the course key
(included in the syllabus as well). The students were given a homework assignment
(1st exercise) which they were to complete by hand and bring to their 2nd class
meeting. We met in the computer lab and almost every student had their book and
access codes with them, so we all logged in together and they each created their
user name and password. They then entered their homework assignment from the
first class into PT. After that---we perused the grade book and they were able to
check their grades for exercise one. It was a piece of cake!!!
I did ask the students this morning to e-mail feedback to me as they began
using Personal Trainer. I logged into my e-mail after lunch today and already had 4
e-mails from students in the 9 o'clock class!

I opened my presentation with an announcement that it had been 21 years since I
had my Public Speaking course and if my voice trembled, that they would please f
orgive me! Actually, not one tremble occurred because of the large spotlight
illuminating from the media control center that totally blinded me!
The in-service went great with good participation within the group. I did something
to wake the students up and asked them a few questions after I presented the CD,
InfoTrac, etc. I handed out Blockbuster gift cards to correct answers and it was a big hit!
Before I showed them InfoTrac, I polled the audience to query who knew what it was..
maybe 5 hands out of 400+ were raised. After the presentation, I queried again as
to how many articles, journals, etc. were accessible and at least 90% hands
were raised. I also had several students query if they could use InfoTrac in other
courses, and when I told them yes, they were thrilled. I also walked through the Biagi
CD itself, showed the CNN clip about downloading music illegally and with a
show of hands, again polled the audience. Then, I went into the website and the
additional materials available through the access via the CDROM. Had about 30
minutes and used all of it. I think it was a great success.

"As I packed up my materials afterwards and was reflecting on how the presentation
went, one of the students approached me to ask if he could return his used
book to the bookstore, so that he could buy a new one instead. He wanted to be
able to take advantage of vMentor and InfoTrac. A moment later, another student
approached to ask if he had heard me correctly-that InfoTrac articles don't just
cover biology, but can be used for other subjects and classes. He was very excited
about the prospect of using it for some of his other courses this semester. As I walked
out of the classroom, an older woman approached me. This student
(who was close to my age) wanted to thank me for presenting to her and the rest
of the students. She had just returned to college to resume her education,
after an 8 year hiatus. "It's been a long time since I've been in college," she said.
"I was particularly worried about this class because I've never been a very strong
science student. But, after listening to your presentation on this textbook and all of the
resources that we have, I think I'm going to do just fine in this class!"
